ST. CHARLES - Carol J. Viola, 79, died early Thursday morning, August 24th 2017, peacefully in her sleep after a struggle with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma diagnosed in 2007. She was the wife of Leo Viola and the daughter of the late Bub and Millie Ahrens. Carol earned her BA, MA, CAS, and Ed. D from Northern Illinois University. She spent most of her professional life as a teacher and administrator at the secondary, community college, and university levels. One of her most satisfying professional experiences was being on the founding faculty of Waubonsee Community College where she also served as Academic Dean and Vice President. Early in her career she did television broadcasting and prior to her retirement she served as a Senior Vice President of a publicly traded corporation. She was survived by a brother, Kurt (Pat) Ahrens; a nephew, Marc Ahrens and his two sons Jake and Ben; a niece, Andrea Ahrens and her two sons John and Matt and her aunt, Barb (Elroy) Krich. Cousins, friends and her beloved cats also survive her. The assistance and support of Carol's family and friends during her illness raised her spirits and eased the journey. Cremation has occurred and at Carol's request there will be no visitation or funeral. She wanted family and friends to have lunch instead. There will be a private gravesite service at Udina Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Laird Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to any charity however, Carol's favorite charities are Lymphoma and Leukemia Research, Animal Shelters and Rescues, Food Banks, Libraries, and Historical Societies. Carol and her family are appreciative of the kindness and care she received from Dr. Jay Thakker, Dr. Perry Menini, and the staff at the Cadence Cancer Center at Delnor Hospital.
